What's this valve actually doing in a hydraulic circuit, pressure-wise? Trying to wrap my head around whether it limits pressure or just regulates it on the fly.

Both, really. The CPF1S 06 F H 20 works as an adjustable pressure relief or regulating valve, so it can either cap the system at a set maximum or regulate pressure depending on how your circuit is configured. You dial it in to whatever ceiling you need, and it keeps the system from exceeding that. Flow rate on this one tops out at 100 liters per minute, so as long as your circuit stays within that, you've got solid pressure control to work with.
