got a PVQ series open circuit piston pump on a conveyor line, is this one the right kind or am i barkin up the wrong tree

For conveyor line hydraulic systems, this unit fits the intended use since it is a Vickers PVQ Series open circuit piston pump and conveyor lines are called out as an application for it.

We run these on our metal forming line and the last pump wore out faster than expected. Does this one hold up better over time, or is it pretty much the same deal?

Longer service life is one of the stated design priorities for the PVQ series, so it should outlast older or lower-spec pumps in comparable duty. For metal forming applications specifically, Eaton Vickers lists that use case as a supported application for this pump, which means it's built with those kinds of cyclic load demands in mind. Keeping fluid clean and within the right viscosity range will do the most to protect it over the long haul.
