what exactly is the "hose shank" end on this thing -- is that the barbed end that slips over the hose, or is it somethin different?

The hose shank is the barbed fitting end that slides into the inside of a hose and gets secured with a clamp or ferrule. On this coupling, one end is that shank connection and the other end is the 6-inch male Bauer-style lever coupler. So you're getting a direct hose-to-Bauer connection in a single fitting without any extra adapters in between.
