does this socket work with HTMA couplings or is it its own thing entirely

At the 3/8" size, it is interchangeable with HTMA couplings, so swapping between the two shouldn't give you any trouble. Outside of that size, no interchangeability is listed, so stick to the 3/8" application if that compatibility matters to your setup.
