does this fitting work for general hydraulic lines or is it more of a specialty item

General purpose hydraulic work is exactly what the 1A Series is built around. It covers low and medium pressure applications, so it fits a wide range of standard hose assembly jobs. One thing worth knowing upfront: if your system sees shock loads or pressure spikes, you'd want to look at H277 or H435 fittings instead. Those are the better call where shock hazards are a concern.

trying to replace a fitting i pulled off, is this 1A16SL16 the male Staplock Matchmate one for a -16 hose?
