got a hose with a 1-1/16-12 male JIC end, will this adapter step me down to 7/8-14 male JIC on the other side?

both ends on this thing are male JIC fittings -- that right? trying to make sure i order the correct adapter for connecting two female JIC lines together

Correct on both counts. Each end carries a male JIC SAE 37-degree flare, one at 1-1/16-12 and the other at 7/8-14, both built to SAE J514 spec. So if you've got two female JIC ports of those respective sizes that need bridging, this adapter is the right call.
