what exactly is the "braided" part about on this hose, is that just for looks or does it actually do something?

The braiding is a reinforcement layer woven into the hose wall. On a clear PVC hose like this one, it adds structural support so the hose holds its shape under pressure and resists kinking, which plain-wall clear PVC tubing tends to do without it.
