What's the deal with needing to lubricate this valve? Is it absolutely necessary?

Air line lubrication isn't strictly required, but it's highly recommended to get the most life and best performance out of the valve because of the O-ring seals.

does this valve need lubrication to hold up, or can it run dry off a standard compressor line?

Running it dry will wear the seals down faster than you'd want. The O-ring seals in this valve are built to perform well, but they do their best work with standard air line lubrication in place. It's a pretty common setup on industrial pneumatic lines and doesn't take much to get right. Keep the lube consistent and you'll get a lot more life out of it.
