does the female port on this tee face a specific direction, or is it just one of the run ports?

Two of the ports are 1/4-18 male NPTF and one is 1/4-18 female NPTF. The female port is one of the branch/run positions, not a separate outlet direction. All three ports share the same 1/4-18 thread size, so the configuration stays consistent across the fitting. That mix of male and female on the same tee is what makes it useful when you need to thread directly into a female port without adding an extra adapter.
