what's this adapter made out of, brass or some kind of coated steel?

Brass all the way through, no coating over a base metal. The corrosion resistance comes from a Dura-Kote plating applied on top of the brass construction, which gives it extra protection beyond what bare brass alone would offer in harsh or wet environments.
