does this thing work with SAE O-ring boss ports or is it strictly for JIC fittings

Both ends serve different thread types, which is exactly the point of this adapter. One end is a Male JIC SAE 37-degree flare and the other is a Male SAE O-Ring Boss, both sized at 3/8-24. So if you're connecting a JIC line to an ORB port, this is the piece that bridges that gap.
