threads on this thing, is it a female ORB on one end and male NPTF on the other, or did I read that wrong?

You read it right. One end is a 7/8-14 female SAE O-Ring Boss, which follows SAE J514, and the other is a 1/2-14 male NPTF per SAE J476. That combination is pretty common when you're bridging ORB ports on hydraulic components over to NPTF pipe fittings in the same system.
