trying to replace a fitting, is this one the straight adapter that goes from 9/16-18 male SAE o-ring boss over to 1/4-18 female NPSM?

thread on the female end is 1/4-18 NPSM -- does that mean it'll connect straight onto standard pipe fittings running that same size?

NPSM is a straight mechanical thread, not a tapered pipe thread, so it won't seal the same way an NPT fitting does. The female end here is 1/4-18 per SAE J476, which pairs with other NPSM-spec fittings. If your existing pipe fitting is NPT, the threads will technically engage but won't seal properly. Make sure whatever you're connecting to is also NPSM before you commit to this one.
