thread on the male end is SAE O-ring Boss, but what size exactly and what spec does it follow?

The male end runs a 7/8-14 thread and meets SAE J514. That O-ring Boss configuration is what gives you the sealing surface right at the boss face, so you get a solid leak-resistant connection without relying solely on thread engagement. The O-ring material is NBR, which handles most standard hydraulic fluid types without issue.

got a hose end that’s 1/2-14 female npsm. is this the piece that’ll mate up to it and still seal right?

On the NPSM side, this adapter has a 1/2-14 female NPSM thread per SAE J476. The seal on the other end is handled by the 7/8-14 male SAE O-ring boss per SAE J514, using an NBR O-ring for a leak-tight connection at that ORB interface.
