does this adapter go from SAE o-ring boss on one end to female NPSM on the other, or did I read that backwards?

You read it right. The male end runs a 1-3/16-12 SAE O-ring boss thread, and the female end accepts a 1-11-1/2 NPSM connection. The O-ring boss side follows SAE J514 and the NPSM side is built to SAE J476, so both ends have a clear specification backing them up. If your fitting setup needs exactly that combination, this one matches up.
