If I'm understanding right, this run tee lets you tap into a hydraulic line without changing direction?

That's correct. This fitting is designed for exactly that purpose – allowing a branch connection via the 12 male O-ring boss (MAORB) port while keeping the main flow path straight through the two 08 male JIC (37° flare) ports.
