So this'll adapt a BSPP fitting over to a JIC, right? Just want to be sure before I order.

Exactly. This Adaptall adapter allows you to connect a BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel) fitting to a JIC (Joint Industry Council) fitting.

what's this adapter actually doing, is it just converting thread types between two different systems?

BSPP and JIC are two common but incompatible thread standards, and this fitting bridges them so you can connect lines or components that would otherwise not mate up. BSPP is a parallel British thread commonly found on imported equipment and certain fluid power components, while JIC uses a 37-degree flare seat and is standard on a lot of American-made hydraulic hydraulic connections. The 9005-08-06 from Adaptall handles that crossover in one piece without needing additional adapters stacked together.
