running a half-inch line to a couple air tools in the shop and space is real tight back in that corner, does this thing handle both the filtering and pressure regulation without needing two separate units?

That's what a piggyback unit does. It combines the filter and regulator into one compact body, so you're not stacking two separate components on the line. The 1/2 NPT ports match a standard half-inch pneumatic line, and the 5 micron element handles particulate filtration while the regulator side lets you dial in pressure anywhere from 0 to 140 PSI.
