got a spot with a 1/4 NPT port on the bottom, will this gauge screw right in or am i missing something

With a 1/4 NPT bottom connection and a male brass fitting, it’s set up to thread directly into a 1/4 NPT female port. It also includes a 0.013 inch throttle plug in that male connection.

gauge says liquid filled -- what's actually in it and why does that matter for something like a hydraulic press setup?

Liquid-filled gauges use glycerin or a similar fluid sealed inside the case to cushion the needle against vibration and pressure spikes. On hydraulic press equipment where you get repeated surges, that dampening effect keeps the needle readable and protects the internal movement from wearing out prematurely. A dry gauge in the same application tends to flutter and lose accuracy a lot faster.
