if I mess up a crimp can I just pull the cage off and reuse the fitting on a new hose end

Reusing components from the E-Z Clip series is strongly advised against. Once the cage and clips are snapped into place and closed they cannot safely be removed and put on a new hose. You need to start with a brand new fitting and fresh clips to ensure a secure seal and prevent refrigerant leaks.

got an ez clip setup already. is this the straight -06 hose fitting with the 5/8-18 male o-ring and that short pilot?

what tool do i need to close the clips on this thing? got the fitting but not sure if i need something special or if regular pliers will do

You'll need the FT1357 Clip Closing Pliers specifically for this job. Regular pliers won't cut it because the tool has to sit square on the clip connection points and stay square through the whole closing motion. Using the wrong pliers risks a bad seal or a damaged clip, and since E-Z Clip components can't be reused, a mistake there means starting over with new parts.
