Does this adapter go from a bigger female thread down to a smaller male, or is it the other way around?

3/8" NPT female is the inlet side, and 1/4" NPT male is the outlet. So yes, it steps down in size. Pretty common setup when you're connecting a larger port on a component to a smaller gauge or fitting downstream.

got a hose end that’s 3/8 npt female and the gauge i’m trying to hook up is 1/4 npt male. is this the right adapter to make that work
