got a 1/4 nptf port and need to tie into an sae male, is this the right kind of adapter?

For a male to male hookup, it matches that setup. One end is 0.25 inch NPTF male and the other end is 0.625 inch SAE male, so it is meant to bridge those two thread types.

Got a fitting that's NPTF on one end and SAE on the other, does this adapter actually bridge both thread types in a single piece?

That's what it does. One end is NPTF male at a quarter inch, and the other end is SAE male at five-eighths inch. So if you're connecting two lines or components with those mismatched thread standards, this brass nipple adapter closes that gap without needing extra fittings in between.
