what's the max spread on this puller? got a gear I need to pull and the mounting points are pretty far apart

The spread on this one goes out to 10.5 inches, so you've got some room to work with on wider jobs. Just make sure whatever you're pulling fits within both that spread and the 5-inch reach. The rule of thumb is your puller's dimensions need to be greater than the job, not just equal to it.

What's the biggest size part this puller can handle, spread-wise?

With a maximum spread of 10.5 inches, it'll work for parts up to that size.

got a bearing that sits about 4 inches down in the way, is this puller gonna reach it and still grab?

With a 5.00 inch maximum reach and a 10.50 inch maximum spread, it will work as long as your setup is under those two numbers. Reach is how far the jaws can reach down to the part, and spread is how wide they can open to get around it.
