What's the point of the strainer on this breather, and is it something that needs replacing regular or just left alone?

Air moving in and out of a hydraulic reservoir carries dust and particulate with it, and without something catching that at the vent point, it works its way into the fluid over time. The built-in strainer on this unit gives you a first line of defense right there at the air exchange point, so contamination has a harder time getting in. As for maintenance, the plastic housing and strainer design are meant to be low-maintenance, so it's not something you'd be pulling apart on a routine schedule under normal conditions.
