Before the pump is started, fill the case through the uppermost drain port with hydraulic fluid of the type to be used. The case of the pump must remain full at all times. The case drain line must be connected directly to the reservoir and terminate below the oil level.

What kind of fluid should I be using in this pump, and how thick should it be?

For best results, you'll want to run either an anti-wear hydraulic fluid or a crankcase oil designated SC, SD, SE, or SF per SAE J183FEB80. When it's running, the fluid viscosity should stay between 80-180 SSU, though you can go up to 2300 SSU when you're first starting it up.
