Rated for 25.8 tons of force at 10,000 psi (700 bar), the Enerpac RC-256 is a single-acting general purpose hydraulic cylinder built around the established RC-Series platform. With a 6.25 in (158 mm) stroke and a 2.56 in (65.1 mm) bore diameter, it suits lifting, pushing, and pressing tasks across a broad range of industrial settings.

Construction features a composite wear band bearing system with a hardened stop ring for reliable sideload resistance, complemented by high-grade polyethylene seals and a plunger wiper that limit contamination and wear. A pre-tensioned Trio Hybrid spring system provides consistent plunger retraction. Collar and plunger threads along with base mounting holes allow flexible fixturing, and the cylinder is designed for use in any position. A baked enamel finish supports corrosion resistance. At 22 lbs (10 kg), the RC-256 ships with a CR400 coupler, dust cap, and collar thread protector. External dimensions and threads remain compatible with prior RC-Series cylinders.

got an older Enerpac RC cylinder, are the threads and outside dimensions the same on this RC-256 or did they change things up

Good news if you are swapping from an earlier RC-Series cylinder. The RC-TRIO generation keeps the same RC-Series model numbers, external dimensions, and threads as the prior RC Series cylinders, so fit and interchangeability stay consistent.

Does the spring actually pull the plunger back on its own, or do I need to run return pressure to get it to retract?

No return line needed. The pre-tensioned spring built into this cylinder handles retraction automatically once pressure is released. Enerpac calls it the Trio Hybrid system, and it's notably faster at snapping back than older spring-return designs. Good setup for situations where cycle time matters or where running a second hydraulic line would be a pain.
