Does this cylinder work for both pushing and pulling, or do you need separate setups for each direction?

Both functions are built into one unit. The load cap snaps out to expose internal piston rod threads, so you can switch to pulling applications without any additional hardware. Those threads are rated to handle the full pull tonnage of 44 tons, same as the retract circuit is designed for. No separate cylinder needed for each direction.
