coupler blew off on my last job because somebody tried to disconnect it while the line was still under pressure. does this one have any kind of built-in protection against that, or is it still on the operator to make sure pressure is relieved first?

No mechanical interlock prevents disconnection under pressure on this coupler. The requirement is purely procedural: the system must be fully depressurized before coupling or uncoupling. That's a firm operating rule for this product, not just a general best practice. Running it pressurized during connection or disconnection is the kind of thing that causes exactly what you described. Make sure everyone on the crew knows the sequence before the line ever gets charged.

got a little hand pump setup, is this coupler meant for that or more for big power units?
