Got a tight spot under some machinery where I need to do a little lifting, will this cylinder actually retract on its own or do I need to manually pull the plunger back down?

Spring return is built right into it, so the plunger pulls itself back without any help from the load or the operator. A lot of pancake-style cylinders depend on the weight of whatever you're lifting to push the plunger back down, which can be a real problem in horizontal setups or lighter-load situations.
