Equipped with a pilot operated relief valve and a built-in full range pressure compensated bypass flow control the SDCF Series 1-Spool Monoblock Valve With Pressure Comp. Flow Control 4-way 3-position Open Center Friction Detent Spool 0-12 GPM Flow Range offers precise control and optimal functionality. The valve has a flow range of 0-12 GPM and operates at a maximum pressure of 3000 PSI. It features 3/4NPT inlet and outlet ports along with 1/2NPT work ports and uses Buna-N O-rings. Its friction detent spool action allows for fine positive metering in either direction making it suitable for industrial applications requiring consistent performance. Flow to the work port is proportional to lever movement maintaining consistency regardless of load changes. This valve combines the features of a 4-way directional control a pressure compensated bypass type flow control and a pilot operated pressure relief valve into one compact and efficient package.

got a pump that puts out 12 gpm. is this valve in the right ballpark or am i gonna choke it down?

With the built-in pressure compensated bypass flow control, the adjustable range is 0 to 12 GPM. That lets you meter flow to the work port in proportion to lever movement, and it is set up to keep the work-port flow consistent even when the load changes.

flow out of both work ports stays the same no matter what the load is doing -- is that actually how this valve works or am i reading that wrong

You're reading it right. The pressure compensated flow control built into this valve keeps output flow constant at each work port regardless of load changes. That's the whole point of the bypass-type flow compensation on the SDCF series. Whatever the load throws at it, flow stays proportional to where you've got the lever set. The relief valve is pilot operated and already built in, so you're not adding external components to get that behavior.
