what fluids can this steering unit run on, and is ATF okay to use in it?

Most petroleum-based hydraulic fluids work fine with this unit, and ATF Type A is also listed as compatible. Just keep your system clean, the recommended filtration level is ISO 18/13, so as long as you're maintaining that cleanliness standard you should be in good shape running either fluid type.
