got a 1-1/4 inch hose I'm trying to connect up to a threaded port on a pump, will this nipple bridge that gap or do I need something different?

this fitting work for liquid transfer on a suction line, or is it just for discharge setups?

Both actually. The RST-15 is rated for low pressure discharge and suction service, so it covers either side of the pump as long as you're moving compatible liquids.
