does this thing work as a straight swap for a 1/2 NPT female port connecting to a SAE O-ring boss fitting, or is there something extra I need to account for?

That connection is exactly what this adapter handles. One end is a 1/2-14 female NPT swivel, and the other is a 1-1/16-12 male SAE O-ring boss. The swivel end gives you some flexibility during installation so you're not fighting the line to get it to sit right. The 90-degree angle means your hose or pipe routes away from the port instead of straight out, which is real handy in tight quarters where a straight fitting just won't clear.
