does this coil just slide over the hose or do you gotta open it up some to get it on there?

You'll likely need to unwind it slightly to open up the ID before fitting it over the hose. The coil is meant to sit snug once it's in place, but expanding it a bit first is pretty much part of the standard install process. Once you let it wind back down around the hose, it holds firm and does its job keeping the cover and reinforcement from taking abuse.
