got a tight spot in a hydraulic line where I need to change direction without a lot of room to work with, does the 45-degree angle on this fitting actually help with that or is it more of a minor offset?

Forty-five degrees gives you a real working angle, not just a slight bend. In cramped routing situations where a straight fitting would put stress on the hose or force an awkward path, this elbow lets you redirect flow without kinking or straining the line.
