got a groove set up for a quad ring, will this -216 quattro ring drop in or is it some oddball size

For a groove that’s already cut for quad ring geometry, the -216 Style QR quattro ring is meant to be a direct replacement. It’s the -216 dash size and you get four rings in the pack.

these got the same groove dimensions as a standard O-ring in -216 dash size, or do I need a different groove cut for the quad-lobe profile?

Quad rings do require a groove designed for that cross-section geometry. While the -216 dash size gives you the same nominal dimensions as an O-ring in that size, the four-lobe profile means you'll get the best sealing performance when the groove is cut to quad-ring specifications. Dropping one into an O-ring groove will often work in static applications, but for reciprocating or rotary duty you really want the groove matched to the profile to keep the lobes seated right and avoid uneven wear.

Buna-N material handles petroleum-based hydraulic fluids just fine, so you shouldn't have any problems there.
