How tight should I make this thing when I'm puttin' it on? Just hand tight, or should I get a wrench on it?

For initial installation, hand-tightening the wing style nipple should be sufficient to get a good seal. The wing design helps with that. However, you might need a wrench for a final adjustment to ensure it's snug and leak-free, especially in high-pressure systems.
