How to Choose the Right Performance Part

Match hose construction to the fluid and temperature, pick reusable or crimp fittings based on how often the assembly is reworked, and keep dash size consistent across every component in the line.

PTFE-lined hose is specified for the most demanding chemical and heat resistance requirements — ethanol fuel compatibility, extreme underhood temperatures, and aggressive fluid chemistries that degrade rubber-lined hose prematurely. • Select Reusable or Crimp Fittings Based on Application and Assembly Capability Reusable fittings thread onto the hose end without crimping equipment — a significant convenience for race teams, performance shops, and builders who change hose routing between events or builds. Reusable fittings require careful assembly to the manufacturer’s procedure (correct installation depth, correct torque on the socket and nipple), and should be inspected for seal condition before each reassembly. Crimp fittings produce a factory-finished assembly with a certified pull-out strength — the correct choice for permanent installations where the fitting will not be removed. For street-driven vehicles, crimp fittings are typically preferred; for race applications where hose routing changes frequently, reusable fittings offer necessary flexibility.
• Use Dash Size Consistently Throughout the System AN performance fittings use a dash size system (-4, -6, -8, -10, -12) that identifies the hose ID in 1/16″ increments. Every component in a performance fluid line — hose, fittings, adapters, bulkhead fittings, and carb adapters — must be specified in the same dash size to ensure consistent bore diameter and fitting compatibility throughout the circuit. Mismatching dash sizes creates a flow restriction at the transition and a fitting mismatch that may appear to assemble but will not seal correctly. Select the dash size based on the flow requirement first, then spec all components in that dash size from end to end.
