Adapters

Connector products, including adapters and tube fittings, allow hose assemblies to be directly connected to main system components, such as valves, cylinders, filters, pumps and motors. They are an essential part in hydraulic systems and they need to be strong and reliable to guarantee the safety in the applications they are used in. Adapters are manufactured in various shapes and sizes to offer many options for installing hose or tube assemblies into a system. Our available selection of hydraulic adapters includes: Brass Adapters Stainless Steel Adapters Steel Adapters.

HSC stocks one of the most comprehensive hydraulic adapter inventories in the Southeast — steel, brass, stainless, and aluminum adapters covering JIC, ORFS, NPT, AN, BSP, O-ring boss, banjo, and high-pressure configurations. Same-day availability on most adapter styles, 40+ locations.

How to Choose the Right Adapter

Identify both port standards, match the adapter material to the fluid and pressure, and prefer O-ring face seal (ORFS) connections wherever a new hydraulic line is being assembled.

  • Identify Both Port Standards Before Selecting an Adapter Every adapter converts one connection standard to another — and you must correctly identify both ends before selecting the fitting. Common hydraulic port standards include JIC 37° flare, ORFS (O-ring face seal), ORB/SAE straight thread O-ring, NPT pipe thread, metric BSP, and SAE split flange. Measure thread OD and pitch (or use a thread gauge), and identify the seat type — tapered pipe thread, 37° flare, 42° inverted flare, flat face with O-ring, or banjo through-bolt. Misidentifying either end produces a fitting that will not thread in or will not seal, regardless of how it looks when placed against the port.
  • Select Adapter Material for the Fluid, Pressure, and Environment Steel is the correct material for main hydraulic circuit adapters — it handles working pressures up to 6,000+ PSI and is compatible with mineral-based hydraulic fluids. Brass is appropriate for pneumatic and low-pressure port connections. Stainless is required in corrosive, marine, or sanitary environments. Aluminum is specified for weight-sensitive applications. Nylon and polypropylene are for non-pressure or low-pressure fluid transfer where chemical compatibility with the fluid excludes metals. Using an aluminum or brass adapter in a high-pressure steel hydraulic circuit creates a pressure rating mismatch — the adapter, not the circuit, determines the assembly’s pressure limit.
  • Use ORFS Wherever Possible for New Hydraulic Connections When specifying adapters for new hydraulic connections, ORFS (O-ring face seal) is the preferred standard. ORFS seals on a flat machined face with a captured O-ring — it does not rely on metal-to-metal contact for sealing the way JIC flare connections do, and it maintains leak-free performance under vibration and repeated make-and-break cycles that JIC connections can struggle with. When adapting from an existing JIC port, a JIC-to-ORFS adapter at the port transitions the circuit to the ORFS standard for the remainder of the line.

Industrial Applications of Adapters & Fittings

Hydraulic and pneumatic adapters are among the fastest-moving items in any fluid power installation — because virtually every system build, modification, or repair involves at least one thread standard conversion or port style mismatch. In construction equipment, adapters connect OEM circuits to replacement cylinders and valves. In industrial manufacturing, O-ring face seal adapters eliminate leak points that JIC threads develop under vibration. HSC stocks JIC, ORFS, NPT, AN, BSP, and metric adapters for same-day availability.

Adapter & Fitting Components Matter

An adapter installed in a hydraulic circuit operates at every pressure cycle — and an adapter not rated for system pressure is a scheduled failure. Adapters that meet SAE and ISO pressure ratings for their thread form and body size provide reliable service life in continuous hydraulic duty. HSC stocks adapters from Brennan, Aeroquip, and Adaptall — covering every common thread standard in steel, brass, stainless, and aluminum. Our specialists identify the correct adapter for any port combination.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I identify which hydraulic fitting standard my component uses?

The fastest method is a thread gauge and seat inspection. Measure the thread OD and pitch — this distinguishes metric (BSP, DIN) from inch (NPT, JIC, ORFS, ORB) standards. Then examine the seat: a tapered thread with no machined seat is NPT; a 37° cone seat inside the port is JIC; a flat machined face with an O-ring groove is ORFS; a boss port with a straight thread and an external O-ring is ORB/SAE. If you’re unsure, bring the component to an HSC branch — thread gauges and port identification are standard counter tools.

What is the difference between JIC and ORFS adapters?

JIC (Joint Industry Council) adapters seal on a 37° metal-to-metal flare contact between the male nose and the female seat. ORFS (O-ring face seal) adapters seal on a flat machined face using a captured O-ring in the male fitting. ORFS provides a more reliable leak-free seal at high pressures and under vibration — it is the preferred standard for new hydraulic system connections. JIC adapters remain common in existing mobile equipment and industrial machinery. The two are not interchangeable — a JIC male will not seal in an ORFS female, and vice versa.

Can I use a brass adapter in a high-pressure hydraulic circuit?

Brass has significantly lower pressure ratings than steel at equivalent sizes and thread forms. In high-pressure hydraulic circuits — typically anything above 1,500–2,000 PSI depending on the adapter size — steel is the correct material. Brass adapters in hydraulic main circuits operating above their pressure ratings will deform at the threads or seat over time, creating leaks that worsen with continued cycling. Confirm the pressure rating of any adapter against the system’s maximum working pressure, including dynamic surge, before installation.

What is a metric BSP fitting and where is it used?

BSP (British Standard Pipe) is the metric thread standard used in European and many Asian hydraulic components — including those from Japan, Germany, and South Korea. BSP parallel thread (BSPP) and BSP tapered thread (BSPT) are common in imported construction equipment, agricultural machinery, and industrial components. HSC stocks metric-to-JIC, metric-to-ORFS, and metric-to-NPT adapters for connecting metric-ported components to domestic hydraulic and pneumatic circuits, and for servicing imported equipment during maintenance and repair.
