How to Choose the Right Fluid Conveying Component

Work through connection type, material compatibility, and pressure rating across the full assembly to specify the right hose, tube, fitting, or coupler.

• Match the Connection Type to the Application’s Pressure and Environment Hose, tube, and pipe each have distinct advantages in different applications. Flexible hose absorbs vibration, accommodates misalignment, and allows component movement — the right choice for connections to actuators and moving equipment. Rigid tubing and pipe eliminate flex fatigue at fixed connections, reduce the risk of chafing, and are preferred for permanent installations in confined spaces. High-pressure applications require matched fittings — O-ring face seal and AN flare connections provide leak-free reliability that pipe threads cannot match at elevated pressures.
• Select Adapter and Fitting Materials for the Fluid and Environment Material compatibility is non-negotiable. Brass and aluminum adapters are widely used in pneumatic and low-pressure hydraulic applications but are not acceptable in high-pressure hydraulic circuits, fuel systems where aluminum is excluded by spec, or installations exposed to corrosive environments. Steel and stainless are the standard for hydraulic hose fittings. In marine, washdown, and chemical environments, stainless steel fittings and corrosion-resistant hose covers are required to achieve acceptable service life. Always confirm fitting material is rated for the fluid being conveyed.
• Verify Pressure Rating Across Every Component in the Assembly The pressure rating of a hose assembly is determined by its weakest component — not the hose alone. Mismatched fittings, undersized crimp ferrules, or non-rated quick disconnect couplers will fail at or below the lowest-rated component in the line, regardless of the hose’s published working pressure. For critical hydraulic circuits, confirm that fittings, adapters, and couplers all carry pressure ratings equal to or exceeding the system’s maximum operating pressure, including surge.
